The northern tip of George Street ends in an interesting historical area of The Rocks. This area is the hub of touristy activities as most cruise liners dock at Overseas Passenger Terminal which is between Rocks and the Opera House. At Circular Quay you can catch ferries and trains to all parts of the city.
The Rocks is a great place to stay if your visit to Sydney is short and you want to access the best places in town on foot. Some of the best hotels including Shangrila, InterContinental, Marriott and Grand Hyatt are located right next doors.
Sydney's best restaurants including Wildfire, Doyles, Sailors Thai, Quay and Sake restaurants are within walking distance of each other. You can enjoy nice food and drinks at Argyle or famous Orient Hotel located on George Street. Mercantile Hotel is another popular spot with the locals.
On Cumberland Street, in front of Shangrila Hotel, there is Sydney Bridge Climb or you can simply take a walk across the harbour bridge to Kirribilli. Also, the famous Opera House is walking distance from the Rocks.
Do not forget to visit the market on The Rockets on every Sunday to taste the local flavour of coffee and buy interesting souvenirs from Sydney. Hickson Street runs from Holiday Inn at Rocks to Bangaroo Wharf where a new multi-billion-dollar casino is under construction. Sydney Theatre Company is located on Hickson Road. A couple of old docks are converted into fancy apartments and offices while retaining the same old look and feel. Across the water, you can see new terminal for cruises liner and Luna Park to the right near the bridge. On a river cruise, you can explore these waterways and learn quite a lot about the history of these areas and some interesting spots to explore. Lord Nelson is a popular hang-out with Sydney siders that claim to be one of the oldest pubs around. Also, The Australian is 5 minutes walk from their serving amazing pizzas and beer. Shangrila Hotel is next door. If feeling adventurous catch a lift to Bar 36 overlooking the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
Take a walk down to Jackson on George to enjoy more than 100 variety of beer from around the world. Morrison Bar and Oyster Room is located on the opposite side of George Street.
