Planning a budget holiday in Kuala Lumpur and looking for a hotel with an ideal location close to most places of interest in the city? Travelodge City Chinatown must be on your list for this year’s visit to Kuala Lumpur.
I stayed at the Travelodge in July 2025 for three nights and enjoyed the comfortable accommodations and easy access to the places I wanted to explore on foot. During my stay in Kuala Lumpur, I’ve previously booked hotels in both KLCC and Bukit Bintang. This time, I wanted to experience the city’s historic side, so staying near Petaling Street felt like the perfect choice. While it’s easy to reach the Masjid Jamek area by train, staying locally allows you to slow down and explore the neighbourhood at your own pace. Every part of Kuala Lumpur has its own atmosphere, culture, and charm, giving each area a unique character and travel experience.
Here is a list of some of the popular places located near the Travelodge Chinatown:
- Kasturi Walk and The Central Market of Kuala Lumpur
- Petaling Street and Chinatown – with a large number of Cafes on Jalan Petaling
- Merdeka Square and City Gallery
- Botanic Garden & Butterfly Garden
- Central Mosque
- Museum of Islamic History
- Masjid Jamek India
- MRT Pesar Sani
What are the benefits of staying in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur?
There are hundreds of restaurants serving local and international cuisine at very reasonable prices. I explored the area between Masjid India LRT and Chinatown and found many interesting South-Indian eateries and Asian restaurants side by side. Chettinad, a South Indian style cuisine originating from Tamil Nadu in India, is quite popular among the South Indian community living in the Chinatown and Brickfields area of Kuala Lumpur.
I highly recommend Sin Kiew Yee Shin Kee Beef Noodles, a well-known establishment specialising in beef noodle soup dishes. The presentation and decor of the restaurant are straightforward, but the flavour shows perfection achieved through serving the same dishes for generations.

What are some of the best places to explore near the Travelodge Kuala Lumpur Chinatown?
I explored Jalan Petaling Street on foot and was surprised to find a large number of cafes, restaurants, and hidden bars in the back alleys of Chinatown. The street adjacent to the 4 Points Sheraton hotel has several uptown trendy cafes and eateries, which are a recent addition post-COVID.

Leaf & Co. Cafe, Jalan Petaling
Most cafes are open till late at night. The streets around Jalan Balai Polis and Jalan Petaling are packed with nice cafes and restaurants. I visited several coffee shops, including Leaf & Co. and Vintage 1988 cafes in the neighbourhood and enjoyed the cool, relaxed vibe and vintage settings and decor catering to digital nomads and young crowds seeking more Western experience.

Staying in Travelodge Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur in 2026
This time round, my trip was a quick one — I’d booked a hotel in Gohtong Jaya, planning to spend the weekend up in Genting Highlands. But a flight delay out of Sydney threw a spanner in the works, so I decided to crash in the city for the night instead and use the daylight hours to explore, especially with a clear, sunny forecast on the cards.
For accommodation, I went straight to Booking.com to hunt down the best rates, and I wasn’t disappointed — I snagged a deluxe room for just RM160. Walk-in rates for the same weekend were pushing well over RM200, so booking online turned out to be a smart move that saved me some real money.
I woke early the next morning, drawn by the forecast for clear skies and the promise of a beautiful sunrise over Merdeka Square. When I arrived, I found preparations already underway for a formal event on 10th July — tents were being set up ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to launch a new taxi service in KL.
The morning light was perfect, and I spent a good while photographing the square and capturing a few short videos before setting off on foot toward Masjid Negara, then on to the Majestic Hotel. Having stayed at this heritage luxury property a couple of times before, I couldn’t resist popping in for a lavish breakfast. The Majestic remains one of Kuala Lumpur’s most distinctive heritage hotels, its colonial-era architecture and atmosphere offering a real glimpse into the city’s rich past.
