Gurney Drive Penang

Description

What is Gurney Drive famous for?

Nestled along the northern coast of Penang, Gurney Drive is an iconic seafront promenade that offers a delightful blend of modern attractions and timeless charm. As the sun dips below the horizon, the area comes alive with vibrant street food stalls, serving up some of Malaysia's most beloved culinary delights like char kway teow, asam laksa, and rojak. Beyond its gastronomic appeal, Gurney Drive is also home to Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon, two premier shopping destinations where you can indulge in retail therapy or catch the latest blockbuster.

For those seeking a touch of culture, the nearby Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram and Dhammikarama Burmese Temple offer serene spaces for reflection and a glimpse into Penang's rich multicultural heritage. Whether you're a foodie, a shopaholic, or a culture enthusiast, Gurney Drive promises an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Penang.

Several high-end 5-Star Hotels are located on Gurney Drive offering amazing views of the ocean overlooking Butterworth. Family-styled serviced apartments are popular choices by families as the rooms are more spacious and equipped with kitchen and lounge area.

Some of the popular places to stay include:

I've had my fair share of memorable experiences with my car getting clamped near the main roundabout in front of the promenade. Parking in a no-parking zone, even on weekend nights, can turn into a real headache. The police patrol the area regularly, and any illegal parking will almost certainly result in your car getting clamped or towed away.

One evening, I parked my car outside Gurney Plaza, unaware that paid parking was enforced until 10 pm. When I exited the shopping mall, I was shocked to see my car being loaded onto a tow truck. Thankfully, I managed to reach just in time and only had to pay a fine of RM 60.

Where to eat at Gurney Drive?

Gurney Drive comes alive at night with food stalls offering a variety of local delicacies at very reasonable prices. The weekend night markets are a hit, filled with hawker stalls serving popular local dishes. Be sure to try the Char Kway Teow with Duck Egg, Rojak, and Ice Kacang.

With its stunning waterfront views and coastal walk, Gurney Drive is a magnet for crowds over the weekends. It's equally beloved by locals and tourists. Recent developments have enhanced the waterfront's appearance, adding plenty of open spaces for walking or simply soaking in the pleasant surroundings.

Gurney Paragon boasts an array of Western-styled cafes and popular chains like TGI Fridays. My visit included a delightful dinner and coffee at the mall, followed by a shopping spree at Gurney Plaza, which is home to numerous branded outlets and local stores. The dinner at TGI Fridays was a highlight, set in an inviting and contemporary atmosphere.
