Planning a trip to Tagaytay from Manila

I stayed in Manila for a week and decided to explore the region of Luzon. Tagaytay stood out as a popular Hill Resort located at a two-hour drive from Manila City.
I booked a car with a local operator and decided to leave early in the morning from Makati, where I was staying. The traffic on the freeways around Manila builds up quickly, and it is highly recommended to start early to make the best of your day.

The trip with smooth with not much outbound traffic towards the Tagaytay area. The hilly area of Tagaytay is also named as the Santorini of the Philippines, as many celebrity houses are built in a similar style to the Greek Island destination of Santorini, with blue rooftops and brightly white painted walls.

Key Takeaways

  1. Tagaytay is a popular tourist destination in the Philippines known for its cool climate and stunning views of Taal Volcano.
  2. Tagaytay is easily accessible from Manila by bus, car, or private transportation, with a travel time of about 1-2 hours.
  3. Must-visit attractions in Tagaytay include Taal Volcano, Picnic Grove, Sky Ranch, and the Tagaytay Ridge.
  4. Tagaytay offers a wide range of dining options, from local delicacies to international cuisine, with a focus on fresh produce and scenic views.
  5. Outdoor activities in Tagaytay include horseback riding, ziplining, and nature walks, providing visitors with a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

The first stop along the way was the Picnic Spot, a picnic area with plenty of vegetation and open spaces. The hill spot commanded a great view of Lake Tagaytay and Taal Volcano.

This area has some local tour guides working for the resorts located along Lake Taal. These agents work on commission and will take you to the resort that offers them good commission. You can drive down to the lake and walk into any resort of your choice, or accompany one of these agents who offer:

  1. Day stay at the resort
  2. Boat Tour of the Lake
  3. A mule ride to the top of Taal Volcano Crater

Booking a local Boat Tour at Lake Taal

The Tom Jovi resort contains bamboo shacks for guests to enjoy meals. I ordered breakfast before boarding the boat tour as we started early from Manila and did not stop anywhere for breakfast. Rooms can also be rented for a day’s stay for nominal rates at this resort.

The rates for the boat tour were fixed at 2500 Pesos for one hour, including the commission for the agent who accompanied us to the resort. The weather was quite nice, and there was a cool breeze, which made the trip very enjoyable.

I decided to stick to the boat tour and enjoy the scenic views and cool breeze. The lake has many tilapia fish farms, and a very unique variety of fish called tiwalis is caught and served in the local restaurant as a specialty. I decided to explore some other resorts in the area for a night’s stay.

Club Balai Isabel is a great location if you are planning a weekend excursion to this area with your family. Private apartments and rooms are available for large groups. This is a very well-maintained property and a great place to stay for the weekend.

Kids’ attractions include an inflatable island and water sports on Lake Taal. Club Balai organises its tours to Lake Taal and Taal Volcano. Staying at this amazing location, you can enjoy a great view of the lake or simply soak in the outdoor pool overlooking the volcanic craters.

Driving from Lake Taal to Tagaytay City

The hilly road leading up to the top of the hill is lined with beautiful bungalows and resorts. The views of the lake are absolutely breathtaking. Local transport, like taxis and rickshaws, is also available to commute to the resorts from the bus stop or any other location in the city. Jeepneys are also a popular mode of transport.

starbucks at tagaytay

Starbucks in Tagaytay is probably the most scenic location to enjoy coffee. The cafe commands amazing views of the surrounding area. I stopped for a quick cup of coffee before heading over to the Pink Sisters Chapel.

Pink Sisters Cathedral is located in Tagaytay City, surrounded by pine trees. The stone structure with a green roof is a sanctuary of peace and an amazing place to reflect, meditate and connect with God. There are some very nice hotels located adjacent to the chapel for people who plan to spend some quality time in this place of worship.

As part of “religious tourism in Tagaytay”, the Pink Sisters Chapel reflects the deep-rooted Catholic faith that forms a vital part of Filipino culture.

Whether you’re on a spiritual journey or simply seeking a quiet moment away from the bustle of city life, this sacred site offers a beautiful glimpse into the Philippines’ enduring religious traditions and devotion.

Lunch at Leslie’s in Tagaytay

Leslie’s Restaurant in Tagaytay is a well-loved dining destination that captures the heart of Filipino cuisine and hospitality. Famous for its signature “Bulalo“— a rich, comforting beef broth simmered with vegetables — and Tiwilis, a crispy, deep-fried fish found only in this region, the restaurant is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic local flavours.

The ambience at Leslie’s is warm and inviting, especially during lunchtime when families gather to share hearty meals while overlooking the stunning Taal Lake. Adding to the charm, local musicians often serenade diners with classic Filipino songs and cheerful birthday tunes, creating a joyful and memorable atmosphere.

The menu features an impressive selection of traditional dishes, from flavorful stir-fried seafood to the beloved Bulalo that warms the soul. I also had the pleasure of tasting Tiwilis, perfectly fried and served with a zesty chilli sauce — a true regional specialty. To top it all off, a chilled fresh coconut drink provided the ideal refreshing touch to a truly satisfying Tagaytay dining experience.
